K-1 is mixed martial arts, but standing up: fighters from different disciplines compete under one banner, with kickboxing rules. Punches, kicks, knees, no dead time and no ground fighting. It is the most spectacular combat sport to watch live.
What is K-1?
K-1 brings together fighters from different disciplines, such as taekwondo, karate or Muay Thai, under one banner and the same kickboxing rules: punches, kicks and knees. Clinching is very short, and there is no wrestling (grappling) and no ground fighting. The style started in Japan in 1993, founded by Kazuyoshi Ishii, a karate practitioner. The result: fast, attacking fights with no dead time.
K-1 rules at a glance
- Standing only: no wrestling and no ground fighting.
- Allowed strikes: punches, kicks and knees.
- Banned strikes: in classic K-1, elbows, throws and headbutts are not allowed.
- Limited clinching: the referee separates the fighters quickly (a clinch lasts only a few seconds).
- Length: originally 3 rounds of 3 minutes. At FTC, it is 3 rounds of 2 to 3 minutes depending on the level, and 5 rounds for title fights.
- Ways to win: knockout, a stoppage by the referee or the doctor, or a judges’ decision.
The exact rules can vary a little depending on the federation that sanctions the event and the fighters’ level.
A bit of history
The first K-1 World Grand Prix took place on April 30, 1993, in Tokyo. It introduced kickboxing to a very wide audience and made names like Peter Aerts, Ernesto Hoost and Andy Hug famous. Since then, K-1 has become a style that promotions around the world have adopted.
K-1, Muay Thai, boxing, MMA: what is the difference?
- Boxing: punches only.
- Muay Thai: punches, kicks, knees and elbows, with longer clinching.
- MMA: striking, wrestling and ground fighting.
- K-1: punches, kicks and knees, standing, without elbows in its classic form.
